You may have already seen this news story beginning to works its way around various social networks and bookmarking sites. Now the international news is starting to pick up on this story which broke in China on Sunday.
CCTV video captured a two-year-old girl being hit by a truck and then ignored by multiple street walkers before being helped by a factory worker in Foshan. The video has been watch nearly 1.5 million times.
In the video the toddler by the name of Yueyue is seen wondering onto the street only to be hit by an oncoming van. The van then pauses momentarily only for the driver to carry on driving finally running over the toddler with his back wheels.
The video then continued to show about a dozen passers-by, including cyclists, a motorcyclist and a woman and child, noticing the little girl lying injured in the street but walking on.
A second vehicle then goes on to drive over the child for a second time not even pausing to think about what he was driving over until a rubbish collector spotted the little girl and moved her to the kerb, then began looking for her mother.
In fact the rubbish collector who spotted the child was shouted at before attending to the child to mind her business.
It provoked a storm of comment on microblogging site Weibo.
“Even pigs and dogs are better than they are!” said one angry contributor about the passers-by.
“In China, there’s no bottom line for human ethics anymore! China is ‘smashing’ new records again and again!” commented another.
There’s conflicting reports of the well-being of Yueyue now, with some reports saying that she is in a coma to others saying that she has died.
Yue Yue’s mother has opened a verified Weibo account to update the public.
Three hours ago, her post read: “Yue Yue is still at the I.C.U. and cannot breathe on her own. But she has slight feelings in her hands and feet [...] Thank you for all your care and support.”
